How to Make your Electrolyte Drink to Help with Constipation or Diarrhea

Electrolytes are natural elements that play an important role in regulating various physiological functions in the human body. The most common electrolytes are calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, chlorides and phosphates. These electrolytes regulate secretion and composition of bodily fluids including blood and urine. Electrolytes are sourced from various types of foods and drinks. Many people are recommended supplements if they have electrolyte imbalance.

Electrolyte imbalance or deficiency, in other words electrolyte disorder, can cause fatigue, irregular heartbeat, seizures, nausea, constipation or diarrhea, weak muscles, abdominal cramps, confusion, irritability, tingling or numbness and headaches among others. Severe electrolyte imbalance can cause cardiac arrest and even coma. There are many types of electrolyte disorders depending on the particular deficiency. Fortunately, you can counter or avert electrolyte disorders with your own electrolyte drink made at home. If you are experiencing constipation or diarrhea, these drinks can usher in a welcome change.

  • Constipation and hydration are often interlinked. Those who are perpetually dehydrated may have indigestion and irregular bowel movements. Both can lead to constipation. Not everyone suffers from serious dehydration. There may be apparently no symptoms of dehydration unless one is thoroughly diagnosed. If you are dehydrated and you have constipation, you need to check your salt intake. You can make a homemade electrolyte drink with sea salt, raw honey or maple syrup and water. Take sixteen ounces of water, add one teaspoon of raw honey or maple syrup and one pinch of sea salt. Mix the blend well and drink it.

  • Constipation or diarrhea can have many causes. One common cause for either or both is indigestion or digestive problems. Not every digestive problem is indigestion. There can be various problems in your gastrointestinal system, from the lack of enough digestive juices to more unhealthy bacteria in your small intestine, irregular movements in your colon to pancreatic issues, among others. You can make an electrolyte drink with raw apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, maple syrup or raw honey and ginger. Take half a cup of raw apple cider vinegar, squeeze one lemon and use all the juice, combine the two in a glass, add one teaspoon of grated ginger and up to two tablespoons of maple syrup or raw honey. Mix the blend well till the maple syrup or raw honey is completely dissolved. You can use a mason jar if you want. Shake the mixture well and use water to dilute it to an extent you want. Make sure you have some texture or the drink will be bland. Usually, up to fifty ounces of water is good enough for the above proportions.
  • Constipation and diarrhea are antonyms but there may be similar or different causes. Irritable bowel syndrome can cause bouts of diarrhea alternated with bouts of constipation. Indigestion and other gastrointestinal problems may also cause the same. One issue with diarrhea is that it leads to loss of electrolytes. You would need to replenish your stock of electrolytes. Take sixteen ounces of water, one pinch of sea salt, one teaspoon of maple syrup or raw honey, half a teaspoon of baking soda, half a teaspoon of magnesium and an optional half a cup of any fruit juice you prefer for flavor and also some nutrients. Mix them well and make sure every solid ingredient is finely dissolved.
  • Another amazing recipe for a natural homemade electrolyte drink requires orange juice, lemon juice, organic maple syrup or organic raw honey, water or coconut water, Celtic sea salt or Himalayan pink salt. Take half a cup of orange juice, ideally freshly made or squeezed, quarter of a cup of lemon juice, also fresh, two cups of filtered water or coconut water, the latter should be raw, two tablespoons of maple syrup or honey and a pinch of the preferred salt. Blend the mix and store or share straightaway.
