How to Make Your Own Bone Broth

After reading all of these amazing benefits of bone broth, you probably want to know how to make your own.

Here is a recipe:

  • 4 lbs beef bones (Look for a wide variety of marrow bones and meaty bones, such as short ribs or knuckle bones. Your local butcher can help make sure the bones are cut small enough.)
  • 1 gallon water
  • 2 Tbsp Apple cider vinegar
  • 1 onion
  • 2 large, unpeeled carrots chopped into bite sized pieces
  • 2 stalks of celery chopped into bite sized pieces
  • Generous sprinkle of parsley
  • 1 tablespoon coarse salt
  • 1 teaspoon peppercorns
  • Garlic to taste (we found 2 cloves
  • 2 bay leaves (add these in the last 30 mins of simmering for the best flavor)

Roast the bones and vegetables in an oven set to 450 degrees Fahrenheit for about 40 mins, stirring halfway through. Once roasted, put all of the contents (including any juices!) into a large pot. Add the spices, water, and ACV. Cover with a lid and bring to a boil.

Reduce to a simmer and periodically skim foam and excess fat off the top of the bone broth. Ideally, you'll want to simmer this for 8 to 24 hours. Do not leave unattended! If you're headed to bed or out for the day, remove from heat and place in the fridge until you can begin again.

Alternatively, you could prepare this in a crock pot. The longer it cooks, the more gelatin and nutrients will be released from the bones into the broth. This results in a rich, silky broth sure to delight every taste bud!

Once cooked and cooled, strain the liquid to remove bones and vegetables, if you don't want veggie bone broth. Store in the refrigerator for up to a week or 6 months in the freezer. Heat in small batches to enjoy!
